Ben Thompson has left Millwall after his contract was mutually terminated.
The midfielder departs the club having made 175 appearances and scoring 12 goals since his debut in a League Cup tie at The Den against Southampton in August 2014.
After just that one appearance in 2014/15, it was under the stewardship of Neil Harris in which Thompson became a Lions regular, playing 36 times and finding the net twice - his first goal for the club in an FA Cup tie against Wycombe Wanderers, followed by a Goal of the Season winner at home to Shrewsbury Town - in a campaign that ended with a Wembley Play-Off Final against Barnsley.
Thompson was an unused substitute as The Lions returned to Wembley the following season, defeating Bradford City and winning promotion to The Championship, but the midfielder featured 47 times in the engine room and became a vital cog in a successful season.
Playing time was limited in Millwall's first year back in the second tier, with Thompson restricted to just three League appearances - but it was in the FA Cup, however, where the number eight flourished, scoring in consecutive rounds against Barnsley and Rochdale.
A loan spell at Portsmouth followed, before Thompson showed some of his best Lions form upon his return, scoring four times in six games, including a brace at Birmingham City and a goal at Elland Road against Leeds United.
The now-26-year-old played 30 times in the COVID-19-hit season of 2019/20, including scoring the first goal of the Gary Rowett era at home to Stoke City in October 2019. Another 34 apperances and three goals followed in 2020/21, with his last Millwall goal coming in a 2-0 win against Birmingham on 17th February 2021.
Thompson made his final Lions appearance against Nottingham Forest on 15th January 2022.
No-nonsense, tough-tackling and a character on and off the pitch - Ben Thompson has been at the heart of everything Millwall for a decade.
The club would like to thank Ben for his outstanding efforts whilst with Millwall and wish him all the best for the future.
