Goalless in SE16

Our report from under the lights...

1 February 2022

Millwall and Preston North End played out a 0-0 draw in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night.

Gary Rowett opted for an unchanged starting XI for the visit of The Lilywhites, with two changes coming on the bench, as Jed Wallace and George Saville returned from injury.

The first 15 minutes lacked action, but The Lions penetrated the Preston penalty area for the first time with 15 minutes on the clock, but Oliver Burke's low cross was cleared away before reaching Benik Afobe.

An intelligent pass from Murray Wallace saw Mason Bennett turn his marker before being hauled down by Sepp van den Berg - who was booked - before The Lions had a free-kick in a promising position with 19 minutes played, but Bennett's kick struck the wall before Burke's touch took the ball out of play.

The game came to life shortly before the half-hour mark as a Scott Malone corner-kick was cleared out as far as Maikel Kieftenbeld on the edge of the area - the Dutchman unleashed a goal-bound effort on the volley, but a Preston body was there to deflect the ball behind. Bennett was then the next to strike from distance, but his attempt was comfortable for Daniel Iversen.

North End's first shot of the night came from Emi Riis with 33 minutes played, but the attempt from outside the area was gathered by Bartosz Bialkowski.

Danny McNamara's ball over the top set Afobe away as the second-half got underway, but the striker's first touch was heavy and allowed Iversen to rush out and smother any attempt on goal by the frontman.

Bennett's effort from distance went wide just before the hour-mark in a night of little action in front of goal, with the double introduction of both Jed Wallace and Connor Mahoney injecting some life into The Lions on 61 minutes.

However, three minutes later it was the visitors who could have taken the lead as Shaun Hutchinson pulled down Liam Lindsay inside the box, directing referee Kevin Friend to point to the spot. Ben Whiteman stepped up, but his spot-kick struck the post before bouncing to safety.

Despite both teams huffing and puffing from there, further action in front of goal was limited - Murray Wallace clipping a right-footed cross across goal and wide with five minutes to play, before substitute Tyler Burey tried his luck on 88 minutes in the final true event of the evening.
