Gary Rowett spoke to millwallfc.co.uk after seeing his side extend their unbeaten run in the Sky Bet Championship to six matches with a 1-0 victory over Bristol City on Wednesday night at The Den.
Jed Wallace thumped home a 64th-minute penalty-kick to settle matters in SE16, and the boss gave his thoughts after the full-time whistle.
"There's parts of the game I thought we navigated quite well, and then there's parts of the game where you can see we haven't won for a bit - you've got to understand that," he said.
"We started well, we used the space well and moved the ball. It looked as though Bristol City had come to counter us and pick us off in transition areas, and they looked quite dangerous once or twice without causing us too many problems.
"But, we got the ball into good areas in the first-half, although the final ball let us down a bit. For 15 minutes we looked promising, then had a 10-minute spell in which we let them come back into the game.
"In the second-half, I thought we needed a bit of a spark. It was a difficult evening for Smudge against three centre-halves - we didn't look like we were getting a lot of joy out of that. I didn't want to take the risk of starting Jed after his illness and not training much, but he came on and was the difference for us."
