Three shown red in London derby

Our report from Sparrows Lane...

22 October 2021

Ten-man Millwall were defeated 2-1 by nine-man Charlton Athletic in Friday afternoon's Under 23s London derby at Sparrows Lane.

Mason Burstow gave The Addicks the lead with the full quota of 22 men on the pitch, but The Lions were then given a man advantage as Nazir Bakrin was shown a straight red card for bringing down Abdul Abdulmalik on goal.

However, Euan Williams was to double Charlton's lead, before Arthur Penney made it 10 versus 10 with a reckless challenge in the second-half. The Addicks were then reduced to nine after Burstow received a second yellow for blocking goalkeeper Joe Wright's kick, before Tyrese Briscoe turned the ball home at the far post three minutes into stoppage-time to set up a frantic finale.

Kevin Nugent's side, however, could not find the equaliser in the little time that was left, suffering defeat on the road.

Millwall had the ball in the net on 20 minutes, but Penney's goal was disallowed for offside.

Next up for Millwall's Under 23s is a home game with Watford on Tuesday 2nd November.

Millwall: Wright, Walker, Penney, Topalloj, Garande (Okoli 90'), Drozd (Leahy 63'), O'Brien, Allen (Boateng 60'), Davis, Abdulmalik, Briscoe. Subs not used: Gillmore, Smith.

Scorer: Briscoe 90+3'

Sent Off: Penney
