2020/21 Season Review Part Three: Unique campaign comes to a close

March-May...

27 May 2021

Scott Malone continued his own personal Goal of the Season competition as The Lions began March with a 2-1 victory over Preston North End at The Den.

After Gary Rowett's side calmly played the ball out from the back, the move found its way to the left-back, who proceeded to thump a shot into the net from around 30 yards out.

Millwall could not capitalise on those three points, however, as Blackburn Rovers were 2-0 winners in SE16 the following Saturday, but Shaun Hutchinson's header on the stroke of half-time ensured The Lions quickly got back to winning ways at Derby County on 13th March.

The topsy-turvy form continued at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, though, as, after goals from Jed Wallace and Mason Bennett, Millwall chucked away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Queens Park Rangers in a London derby.

Three single-goal victories were strung together from there, however, as Middlesbrough and Rotherham United were both defeated 1-0 - Jed Wallace scoring another Goal of the Season contender in the latter - before his namesake Murray and Bennett hit the target to claim an impressive 2-1 win at Stoke City on Easter Monday.

Promotion-chasing Swansea City all but mathematically ended The Lions' hopes of a late surge for the Play-Offs on Sky Sports, with The Lions then digging in to earn a point at another top side in Brentford, before AFC Bournemouth confirmed their slot in the Play-Offs by winning 4-1 in SE16.

Millwall were incredibly unlucky not to come away with a draw - or more - at Vicarage Road as a penalty-kick was their undoing in a 1-0 loss, before contrasting results saw the club end a unique campaign with a win over Bristol City and a defeat to Coventry City.
