Under 23s slip to home loss

Our report from Calmont Road...

2 March 2021

Millwall's Under 23s were defeated 2-0 by Swansea City in the Professional Development League on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite an incredibly dominant performance against their basement visitors, a stoic defensive performance, an outstanding goalkeeper and smash-and-grab finishes from Dan Williams and Jordi Govea gave The Swans all three points.

With George Alexander sitting the game out through suspension and a host of other players injured or missing, Kevin Nugent named a young side for the visit of the Welsh outfit. The Lions started strongly, with Sean O'Brien's set-piece delivery causing problems, but Dan Moss and Abdul Abdulmalik could not find a way through.

With 13 minutes on the clock, with their first foray into the Millwall half, Swansea took the lead. The ball bounced to Williams on the edge of the box, with the midfielder planting a fantastic first-time finish into the bottom corner of the net.

Undeterred by the opening goal, Millwall continued to attack with Reuben Duncan, O'Brien, Arthur Penney, Nana Boateng and Jayden Davis all trying their luck before half-time, but a combination of solid defending and smart goalkeeping kept Swansea' sheet clean.

In the second-half, Abdulmalik, O'Brien and Duncan were among the players continuing to rack up The Lions' incredible dominance, but with 11 minutes remaining, The Swans ventured forward for the first time in the half and found a way to goal through Govea.

Next up for Millwall's Under 23s is a trip to Colchester United next Tuesday.

Millwall: Sandford, Moss, Miller, Duncan, Penney (Okoli 83'), Strachan, Davis (Allen 60'), Skeffington, Abdulmalik, O’Brien, Boateng (Bate 80'). Sub not used: Gillmore.
