Rowett on "managing" squad ahead of Brentford test

The boss previews the weekend...

24 September 2020

Gary Rowett is hoping that his squad rotation policy will assist The Lions with feeling fresh ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet Championship meeting with Brentford (kick-off 3pm).

The manager made eight changes for Wednesday night's Carabao Cup defeat to Burnley - only Bartosz Bialkowski, Shaun Hutchinson and Mahlon Romeo survived from last weekend's win over Rotherham United - meaning the majority of the first XI will have benefited from a seven-day rest by the time The Bees visit SE16.

"We've started the season brightly," Rowett told "My team selection [against Burnley] was tinged with the thought of keeping players fresh for Saturday and managing our squad as well as we can.

"We've got eight players to come back into the side. Bart shouldn't be a issue, the only one I didn't want to play was Hutchy, and Mahlon is building fitness. Wednesday was a good performance in spells, but hopefully now we've got that freshness in our legs for what is an important game on Saturday."

Under the stewardship of Thomas Frank, Brentford enjoyed a successful season in 2019/20 but were pipped to a place in the Premier League by Fulham in the Play-Off Final. After the two opening League fixtures have seen The Lions come up against more physical outfits in Stoke City and Rotherham, Rowett is prepared for a different prospect in the West London side.

"We've played against teams that are really powerful, but now we are playing a team who are possession-orientated and have good movement. We'll be respectful, but we've played against those types of teams before. Brentford are a good side who can cause you problems in an attacking sense, but we think we can do exactly the same."
