Millwall midfielder Shaun Williams has joined Gary Rowett's backroom staff ahead of the 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship season.
The 33-year-old Irishman will combine being a part of the playing squad with a coaching role, and will assist Rowett and assistant manager Adam Barrett with their everyday duties.
Williams has made 266 appearances for The Lions since joining from MK Dons in January 2014, scoring 16 goals.
Speaking to millwallfc.co.uk, boss Rowett stated the reasons behind his decision to ask the midfielder to make the step up.
"From a cultural point of view, keeping Willo involved is great. He understands the players, understands the club, but also, he has a really good knowledge of the game. He sees the next move before a lot of other players do, and that's a good insight into what I'm hoping for from a coaching perspective.
"He won't have to do loads to start with, he'll do the odd session, sit in on meetings and feel his way into things. Predominantly, he will still be playing, but when I ask him to coach, he'll coach. When I need to get a different tactical perspective, I'll pick his brains and ask him about it. I think that's quite a nice combination."
