Ryan Leonard, Ben Thompson and Troy Parrott were all on target as Millwall secured a comfortable 3-0 pre-season friendly win over Southend United at Roots Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions began proceedings on the front foot and were rewarded for a spell of early pressure when Leonard volleyed home from inside the box after Smith had expertly chested the ball down into his path.
Mason Bennett - making his first appearance since re-joining the club on a permanent basis - was lively down the left for Millwall, and on the opposite side Connor Mahoney twice tested Blues keeper Mark Oxley, firstly with a free-kick and then with a low drive from the edge of the box.
Millwall continued to be the better side in possession and deservedly doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark - and in some style. Jiri Skalak, playing at right-wingback, crossed into the box for Thompson, who produced a remarkable volleyed scissor kick to find the bottom corner.
Scott Malone - making his second Lions debut - was one of five changes for the start of the second-half, which began with greater urgency in attack from Southend. But the main goalmouth action continued to take place at the other end as both Skalak and Jed Wallace hit efforts narrowly over the bar from outside the box.
That was only a temporary reprieve for the hosts, however, as Parrott latched on to a through ball from Murray Wallace before delicately dinking over Oxley after 57 minutes to score his second goal of pre-season so far.
The loanee striker nearly added another to his and Millwall's tally shortly after, receiving a pass from Wallace inside the box only to squeeze a shot against the post under pressure from the keeper.
Hayden Muller and Tyler Burey were both introduced late on as Gary Rowett gave two youngsters more first team exposure and the former made a brilliant solo run through the centre of the pitch before finding Tom Bradshaw, who had strayed into an offside position.
Southend changed their entire team with just over 10 minutes to go which gave the Essex side renewed energy in the closing stages but they were unable to find a way past substitute Ryan Sandford as The Lions secured back-to-back friendly wins.
