Optimism the name of the game for Smith

Read from the striker...

21 August 2020

"It's probably the best group I've ever worked with in terms of team spirit" - the words of Matt Smith as the striker undergoes the 10th pre-season campaign of his career.

The 31-year-old forward, who ended the 2019/20 campaign - his first at the club - as top scorer, told of the outstanding camaraderie in the group ahead of the new season, and also praised everyone involved for "adapting" to the current circumstances in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It's my 10th pre-season, and they're all tough!" he explained. "I think we've done a great job of adapting to a strange set of circumstances, and modified it in the sense of we've only had a few weeks to prepare and we are going into a really condensed campaign.

"It's been really tough, but in the right moderation. The lads have definitely felt it in their legs, but I think we'll see the benefit of that come September."

With 14 goals, including a first hat-trick, to his name last year, Smith's attributes are clear for all to see - and after his first season at the club ended with the club falling just short of the Sky Bet Championship's top six, the striker is looking forward with confidence about The Lions' chances.

"As a centre-forward you always want to score goals and impact the side, and you want your goals to lead to some sort of meaningful contribution. I think there were a good few match-winners and equalisers in there [last season], so that's something I'm more pleased about. It's also something I want to improve on next season.

"I've really enjoyed [my time at the club] - it's probably the best group I've ever worked with in terms of team spirit. I don't think we're going to be surpassed in that respect. Given the situation we're in as well, the spirit and camaraderie is going to be of paramount importance. On top of that, we have a lot of talented players and a lot of good youngsters coming through. There's lots to be optimistic about."
