Under 23s defeated in six-goal derby

Our take from Crystal Palace

25 November 2019

Millwall's Under 23s were defeated 4-2 by a strong Crystal Palace side in the Professional Development League at The Eagles' training ground on Monday afternoon.

Isaac Olaofe netted twice for Millwall, but a hat-trick from Brandon Pierrick, along with one for Connor Wickham, secured victory for the home side.

The first chance went the way of Millwall, but Rob Strachan's cross could only be headed on to the roof of the net by Olaofe.

Seconds later, however, Palace were in front after Oliver Tanner's shot took a number of deflections, eventually making its way past Ryan Sandford via Wickham.

Tanner then forced Sandford into a save, before The Lions wasted three chances to equalise midway through the first-half - first, Harry Ransom's header was blocked behind, before Besart Topalloj and Olaofe both missed the target with efforts.

On 33 minutes, though, Millwall were level, as Sandford's kick downfield forced the Palace defence into a mistake. Olaofe pounced on that and struck across Oliver Webber and into the far corner for his first goal of the game.

Four minutes from the break, Palace were back in front, as after Wickham found space to cross, Pierrick was well-placed to score his first of the afternoon as well. On the stroke of half-time, Ransom was judged to have handled the ball from a shot by Wickham, with referee Joel Mannix pointing to the spot - Sandford superbly saved from Wickham, but an unmarked Pierrick had time to stroke the ball into an empty net for 3-1.

Wickham was then clean through on the hour-mark but Sandford thwarted him, before a breakaway from a Millwall corner allowed Pierrick to complete his hat-trick and make it 4-1.

Tyler Burey bounced a free-kick off the post as Nugent's side looked for a way back into the game, with George Alexander heading wide from a Topalloj cross - but Olaofe punished another defensive mistake two minutes into stoppage-time to reduce the arrears.

The Lions had chances to further slash the deficit in eight minutes of injury-time, but could not find a way to goal.
