Hutchinson: Lions squad "over the moon" with Charlton victory

Shaun Hutchinson praised Millwall's sell-out crowd after the defender captained his team to a 2-1 derby day victory over Charlton Athletic in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The defender gave his side a sixth-minute lead over Lee Bowyer's men, but after Jonathan Leko equalised shortly after half-time, it looked as though the points would be shared.

Matt Smith, however, stepped off the bench to head home a 91st-minute winner and send three sides of The Den delirious.

Hutchinson, who has been named in the EFL's Sky Bet Championship Team of the Week, stated to millwallfc.co.uk that the squad are "over the moon" with the result - and paid tribute to the supporters for making The Den "a great place to play in."

"We're really happy, we're over the moon," he said. "You'd rather win 2-0 and see the game out, but the way it went with the last-minute winner, I think the fans will look back and see it's a great day and a win over their local rivals.

"We're pleased now, going into the international break and a few days off with a win, especially given the way that we did it.

"At home, when the fans are like that, it's a great place to play in. We're getting results, and that is credit to them as well, because they help us get them."

After the final international break of 2019, The Lions return for three games in seven days, two on the road, at high-flying Swansea City and Birmingham City.

In contrast to Millwall's home form, the club's away form is at the other end of the scale - but Hutchinson explained that he is "confident" The Lions can begin picking up points on the road in the lead-up to Christmas.

"There's no getting away from the fact that we're really good at home - probably a top-six side - but that away form needs picking up on. I'm sure the gaffer is sitting in his office, wracking his brains at how to do so, but we're confident that we can."
