Young Lions play out stalemate with Barnsley

Under 23s stretch unbeaten run to four games at The Den

22 March 2019

Millwall's Under 23s made it four successive Professional Development League matches unbeaten on Friday afternoon after a goalless draw with Barnsley at The Den.

Lions Under 23 manager Kevin Nugent again fielded several first-team players in South London, with a confident Barnsley side led by Martin Devaney the visitors.

The hosts began brightly, looking to send several balls into the area for Tom Elliott, whose aerial ability was shown to create occasional openings.

Lewis White and Fred Onyedinma looked lively for Millwall going forward, but the Barnsley defence were able to steady the boat and created the first chance of the game when midfielder Elliott Simeone found space of the left-hand side of the penalty area, side-footing an effort wide of Ben Amos' goal.

With the first half heading towards a stalemate, Barnsley arguably should have found the net as Chris Sang's long-range drive was ricocheted into the path of Matteo Aramburu, who first hit the post before knocking wide from inside the six-yard box.

The Reds' number nine again looked the most likely threat, denied well by Amos on two occasions from 25 yards and from inside the area on the turn.

Barnsley skipper Sam Fielding then headed a Jordan Barrett cross inches past the post, before Jesse Debrah rose highest to head just off target in Millwall's best chance late on as the game simmered to a goalless encounter.

Millwall: Amos; McNamara, Debrah, Topalloj, Meredith (Tiensia 59'); Onyedinma, Donovan (c), Hanson, White; Saunders-Henry (Alexander 59'), Elliott. Subs not used: Wright, Mitchell, Parker.
