International Preview

We take a look at our Lions on duty over the international break

19 March 2019

The international break is now upon us, as the Millwall squad will briefly be without a trio of teammates on the training pitch. With a weekend away from Lions action, we turn focus to our three players representing their nations in the coming days…

Shane Ferguson – Northern Ireland

Shane Ferguson has again been called up by Michael O’Neill to the Northern Ireland squad this week, as qualifying begins for the European Championships of 2020. The Green and White Army’s fixtures will take place in Group C, in a tough group alongside Germany, Netherlands, Belarus and Estonia. Shane will hope to build on his current tally of 37 senior caps when O’Neill’s side host the latter two at Belfast’s Windsor Park.

Conor McLaughlin – Northern Ireland

Conor McLaughlin is another Millwall man who has been selected for Northern Ireland by O’Neill. The full-back stands on 34 caps and counting, ahead of hosting Estonia on Thursday and Belarus on Sunday. Northern Ireland are without victory since September, having beaten Israel 3-0 in a friendly fixture. Conor and the nation will also be hoping to end a winless competitive streak stretching back to a 2-0 win over Czech Republic in September 2017.

Aiden O’Brien – Republic of Ireland

A late call-up for the final Irish squad by Mick McCarthy following his inclusion in the provisional list of players, Aiden O’Brien will be in contention to don the green of the Republic of Ireland as they begin their EURO 2020 qualifying campaign against Gibraltar and Georgia. Aiden remains the last player to score for the Republic, having netted on his debut in Poland last September – a header which recently won the nation’s Goal of the Year award. The Irish side kick off their qualifiers in Gibraltar on Saturday, before taking on Georgia at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium next Tuesday night.
