The Opposition: Southend United

A look at Wednesday’s hosts

24 July 2019

Millwall continue their pre-season preparations on Wednesday night, taking in a visit to Roots Hall to face Southend United (7:30pm).

Following victories over Gillingham, Fleetwood Town and Concord Rangers and a narrow defeat to Braga, Neil Harris’ men now take on The Shrimpers with just a week-and-a-half until the start of the Sky Bet Championship season.

Southend prepare for the kick-off to their campaign in League One, having stayed afloat on the final day of 2018/19 and secured a 19th-place finish. The Essex outfit are managed by Kevin Bond, who took the reins at the beginning of April this year and helped steer the club to survival.

The club have so far lost the services of the likes of Ben Coker, Michael Turner and Stephen Hendrie, recruiting players such as Australian international Mark Milligan, Nathan Ralph and Brandon Goodship.

Southend have endured a mixed bag across pre-season thus far in terms of results, with a win at Billericay Town coupled with two draws, and a defeat to Reading.

Millwall have come out on top in four of their last five meetings with Wednesday’s opponents, with Fred Onyedinma netting the sole winner in a 1-0 victory at The Den in February 2017.
