The Opposition: Real Sociedad

The lowdown on The Lions' visiting Spanish outfit

26 July 2019

Millwall return to The Den for the first time since April this Saturday, as Real Sociedad visit SE16 in The Lions’ final first-team friendly of pre-season.

Imanol Alguacil brings his side to UK soil to face both Neil Harris’ men and Nottingham Forest in successive days, boasting the likes of Asier Illarramendi, Adnan Januzaj and Martin Odegaard amongst their squad.

Millwall’s preparations for the 2019/20 campaign have brought mixed results, with wins over Gillingham, Fleetwood Town and Concord Rangers joined by defeats to Braga and Southend United.

Real Sociedad, founded in 1909, were one of the founder members of La Liga 20 years after their establishment. The Basque club can boast two Spanish championships and two Copa del Rey titles, and have played over 75 competitive European matches.

The team is managed by former right-back Alguacil, who has spent his entire coaching career as part of the club’s setup, including stints with the ‘B’ team and youth side. The 48-year-old also represented the club as a player for nine years.

Securing a ninth-place finish in La Liga last term, Sociedad are well-respected members of the Spanish top flight – in which they have enjoyed their current spell since 2010. A notable highlight of the club’s season was a League double over Real Madrid, with 3-1 and 2-0 wins.

‘La Real’ also reached the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, with vice-captain Mikel Oyarzabal netting 13 goals in all competitions. Many Sociedad supporters carry high hopes for the season ahead, with a strong squad looking to improve on last season’s record.
