Thompson looks ahead to starting the season well

Midfielder talks Preston, pre-season and forcing his way into the side

2 August 2019

Ben Thompson has shown his excitement for the new Sky Bet Championship season to begin, and is eager to put the hard work from the squad over the summer into practice as Preston North End visit The Den on Saturday afternoon for the campaign opener.

“I can’t wait – we’ve all worked hard in pre-season,” Thompson said to millwallfc.co.uk.

“It’s great now just to put pre-season to bed and get into the real stuff. We’re looking forward to getting into the new season, the proper games, and we’ll look to work ourselves as high up the table as possible.”

The midfield man is upbeat about Neil Harris’ octuplet of new recruits, and claims he is relishing the competition presented by the new faces – not least fellow central player Jayson Molumby.

“I think the new arrivals have settled in very well, and we’ve got a great set of lads here. All the boys have made them feel welcome, and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t all have settled down by now.

“They’ve come in, they’re looking to play games and prove a point, and we need help after last year which they will bring. We’ll be raring to go for the new season.

“The more competition for us as players, the better. It keeps you on your toes, obviously you want to be playing every game but if you’re not on form then you won’t be playing. For a squad and a football club, having competition for places is key and all the new recruits have come in and done extremely well. The club have bulked up the squad over the summer, and now it’s our jobs to push us further.”

Thompson believes last week’s 3-3 thriller with La Liga side Real Sociedad – and the superb goal he scored – will serve as an excellent confidence boost, and he is looking forward to picking up where he left off towards the end of last season.

“Last week will help us massively. The teams [Real Sociedad] play against and the players they have, they’re a great side and it was a great test for us.

“For me personally, last year didn’t go to plan to begin with and I had to go out on loan so I could come back and play.

“It’ll be nice this time to hopefully push on and get a full season here under my belt – it’s what I need as a player of my age, I’m feeling confident and want to play every game. I’m looking forward to it.”
