Derby defeat for Under 23s

Lions lose to Palace...

6 November 2018

Crystal Palace's late show handed Millwall's Under 23s a defeat in the Professional Development League on Monday afternoon as The Eagles won 2-0.

An even affair looked set for a draw, but strikes from Kian Flanagan and Joseph Hungbo inside the last 10 minutes secured victory for The Lions' South London rivals.

Kevin Nugent opted to field first-team squad members David Martin and Jem Karacan alongside regular Under 23 members Mason Saunders-Henry, Rob Harvey, Lewis White and more, and after surviving early pressure from a Palace side including Premier League players in Scott Dann and Sulley Kaikai, fashioned a first shot on goal on the half-hour, but Isaac Olaofe's effort was saved.

Levi Lumeka worked Martin early into the second half before Saunders-Henry's curling attempt found the arms of opposition goalkeeper Joe Tupper, whilst Olaofe had a shout for a penalty turned down as he looked to head towards goal.

Martin had to withdraw due to injury just after the hour-mark, with substitute Joe Wright tasked with keeping out Palace's potent attack. At the other end, Harvey agonisingly headed Saunders-Henry's cross wide, before Lazar Stojsavljevic heroically blocked a seemingly goal-bound effort from Kaikai with 15 minutes remaining.

With just eight minutes left, however, Millwall's resistance was broken as Flanagan curled a delightful effort into the corner of the net and beyond the reach of Wright, before Hungbo struck home into injury time to complete victory.

Next up for Millwall's Under 23s is a visit to Coventry City on Friday 16th November.

Millwall: Martin (Wright 62'), Brown, McNamara, Karacan, Debrah, Stojsavljevic, Harvey (Alexander 77'), Donovan, Olaofe, White, Saunders-Henry. Subs not used: Hanson, Duncan, Parker.
