Lucky 13 as Lions make it a Good Friday at The Den

Our report from SE16...

30 March 2018

Goals from Shaun Williams and Lee Gregory extended Millwall's unbeaten run to 13 matches with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at The Den in the Sky Bet Championship on Good Friday.

The Lions struck inside the first minute for the third time in four matches through Williams' thumping header - his first of the season - whilst Gregory made it into double figures with the second just after the half-hour mark.

Neil Harris opted to keep the same squad that defeated Barnsley 2-0 before the international break, meaning that Aiden O'Brien once more took his place on the substitutes' bench.

Under 30 seconds in, The Lions took the lead. Jed Wallace's cross evaded everyone, but Ben Marshall raced out to the left-hand side and swung the ball back into the box where Williams was waiting to plant his first goal of the season past Costel Pantilimon.

Forest quickly looked for the equaliser, but it was Millwall who could have doubled their lead with seven minutes on the clock - however, Wallace's through-ball for Gregory was too long.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Ben Watson's shot was deflected into the path of Barrie McKay, but the Scot could only lob over Jordan Archer's crossbar.

Marshall's free-kick caused Pantilimon to punch away on 23 minutes, whilst a lovely passage of passing between Wallace and Steve Morison nearly fashioned a cross five minutes later, but the visiting defence cleared the ball behind.

On 31 minutes Tobias Figueiredo attempted to find a route to goal from 30 yards, but his effort was easily stopped by Archer. Just seconds later, however, Apostolos Vellios' long-range shot whistled past the post.

With 33 minutes on the clock, Millwall doubled their advantage through Gregory. Another Marshall cross found Morison at the back post and after the striker nodded into the path of his attacking partner, Gregory chested down and poked the ball home for his 10th goal of the season.

In the last action of the first-half, Lee Tomlin curled a free-kick well over the crossbar.

On 57 minutes, Shaun Hutchinson's outstanding block from a shot almost became the catalyst for a third Millwall goal, but a defence-splitting pass was agonisingly too long for Gregory to latch on to.

Eight minutes later, Ben Osborn tested Archer with an effort from the edge of the penalty area; the stopper palmed away, but only into the path of Vellios - however, the Greek striker shot over.

The Lions had to defend in numbers as the second-half ticked on in increasingly soggy conditions, but they did have efforts from Jake Cooper and George Saville blocked in their search for a third.

O'Brien made a late return to action as The Lions comfortably held out to remain unbeaten at home since 21st November - and due to being the early kick-off, moved to within one point of the top six.
