Millwall boss Neil Harris has stated that new signing Jiří Skalák brings a "winning mentality" to the club.

The Czech signed a long-term deal at The Den on Thursday morning and will look to force his way into the manager's thinking as the 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship season gets underway this Saturday with The Lions hosting Middlesbrough.

Harris told that whilst his pursuit of the winger was a bit of a waiting game, he looks forward to working with his "excellent" set-piece delivery and "real ability."

"He is a player we've admired for some time. We've tried to bring him to the club on two separate occasions in transfer windows, but it didn't quite materalise for whatever reason.

"We've seen him a lot and he comes highly recommended - not just from our recruitment department, but from all connected with Brighton.

"He fits our style of play, first and foremost, and comes with great references as a character. He's extremely hard-working and has some real ability as well. His crossing ability - with both feet - is very good, his set-piece delivery is excellent and he certainly adds a blend to what we've got already in wide areas. I really look forward to working with him."

Skalák has international caps with the Czech Republic to his name and will look to assist The Lions' strikers in their hunt for goals in 2018/19.

Speaking on the time taken to get the deal over the line, the boss added: "Every manager wants their players in as early as possible to work with during pre-season. Jiří has played at Brighton in a similar style to us for a couple of years now, so he has some basic knowledge of what we do.

"Yes, it can be frustrating in the transfer window and it has been on and off at times. We have to learn that we need to be patient. When you've got transfer fees involved and you've got players coming out of clubs when they maybe want to bring someone else in before they let somebody out, it's never easy.

"What hasn't wilted in this is Jiří's desire to come and play for us. He thinks the club is a really good fit for him with his style of play and he certainly can't wait to play in front of the fan base. He brings a winning mentality to our football club as well and he has won promotion out of this division with Brighton.

"The ability he has on the ball will be pleasing with our strikers and for our midfield players to service him, too. He's a good ball carrier and will get us up the pitch - we certainly look forward to welcoming him to the squad."
