Owls pip Lions to the post...
Millwall's Under 23s bowed out of the Professional Development League at the Semi-Final stage on Monday night after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.Jamie Philpot levelled for the young Lions in the first-half, but George Hirst's double secured a place in the Final for The Owls, where they will take on Hull City, who defeated Charlton Athletic on penalties in the other Semi-Final at The Valley.
Hirst opened the scoring after converting Jack Stobbs' low cross via a deflection, but Philpot made it 1-1 with a clever lob from just inside the penalty area.
However, Hirst grabbed his second of the night shortly before the break, pouncing on a loose ball after Ryan Sandford saved well from Matt Penney's long-range drive.
Millwall tried every route possible to get back into the game and force extra-time, but to no avail.
In spite of the defeat, the young Lions can take great pride from a successful campaign - one which they will hope to repeat next year.
