Millwall's Walking Football team enjoy Portugal trip

10 May 2017

Lions earn credit in Vilamoura sunshine...

Whilst Millwall's first team were tasting Play-Off Semi-Final victory last weekend, The Lions' Walking Football side were also in action, taking part in the twice-yearly tournament at Browns Sports and Leisure Club near Vilamoura, Portugal.

Among the 10 competing teams of over-55s, The Lions sent the only mixed squad - something that was so well received that Val Hampson, one of Millwall's female Walking Football players, was voted 'Most Valuable Player' and received a 'Golden Boot' trophy.

Val's close friend and team-mate Barbara Hawkins, a sprightly 70-something, was pipped by only a few months as the tournament's 'Least Young Player.'

In a demanding programme of six 20-minute games in two days, The Lions were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Clitheroe, who held on to the title that they won the previous year.

The tournament was funded jointly by Millwall For All Trust and by the squad of eight players, with the organisation supervised by Millwall For All employees Dean Palmer, Jack Mitchell and Emmanuel Okino, who will continue to run Walking Football sessions in the Lions Centre for over-50s at 11.30am every Tuesday (costing £2) and Friday (free entry) throughout the year.
