Three-sy does it as young Lions claim first scalp of 2017
Millwall U23s have returned to winning ways in the Professional Development League, seeing off London rivals QPR in emphatic fashion at Calmont Road on Monday afternoon.
It took Calum Butcher just twelve minutes to open the scoring with a powerful drive from an awkward angle inside the box, before goals from Harry Donovan and Noel Leighton completed the 3-0 romp over the Rangers.
However, The Lions were unlucky not to find themselves ahead even earlier when Harry Smith shaved the post after being given freedom to fire 30 yards out from goal.
But the hosts persistence was rewarded moments later as Harry Donovan held off his marker and poked a lofty cross in from the left for Calum Butcher to guide to the ground. The midfielder took a lovely touch away from a sprawling defender and lashed a powerful effort into the roof of the net from a tight angle.
Millwall were given some breathing room five minutes later when Harry Donovan swept a beautiful first-time effort beyond the reach of the keeper after connecting with Mahlon Romeo’s low cross from the touchline.
2-0 at half-time and The Lions had grown in confidence. And when Noel Leighton's headed flick-on found Calum Butcher inside the area it took an acrobatic save from the QPR keeper to deny him his second goal of the afternoon.
But the tide could only be stemmed so long and when an inviting opportunity fell to Noel Leighton at the edge of the area in the 63rd minute, the substitute buried the ball into the bottom corner to seal a comprehensive Lions victory.
