Report | Crystal Palace U23 2-0 Millwall U23s

9 January 2017

Full-time from Dulwich Hamlet

Millwall's U23s have suffered a rare Professional Development League defeat, falling to South London rivals Crystal Palace at a rain-soaked Dulwich Hamlet on Monday afternoon.

In a wet and wild contest, it took second-half goals from Noor Husin and Andre Coker to sink the young Lions for just the second time in thirteen matches.

Calum Butcher, Tom King, Jimmy Abdou and Harry Smith all the started the match after being named on the bench in Millwall's Emirates FA Cup upset over AFC Bournemouth, while defender James Brown was given a full 90 minutes as part of rehabilitation on an injured leg.

Neither side gave an inch in a bruising first-half typical of a South London derby. But Millwall were unlucky not to find themselves in front in the early exchanges as Danny McNamara's driven ball forward took a fortunate deflection off Callum Sturgess' leg and skidded within inches of Harry Smith's outstretched boot at the far post.

A series of free-kicks were equally threatening and when Noah Chesmain floated one towards the penalty spot in the 15th minute, Harry Smith left three defenders gawping to plant a firm header that flashed over the bar.

Nil-all at half-time and the match was in the balance. But Crystal Palace had grown in confidence and come out determined to swing the match their way. And when Ryan King-Elliot found space in the 48th minute to cut into the box from the corner flag and square to Noor Husin to slot into the bottom corner, the Eagles found themselves ahead.

The young Lions were well positioned to strike an instant reply when Jamie Philpot burnt his marker at the touchline from the restart and surged into the box, only to have his cutback cleared by a lunging defender as Harry Smith prepared to tap home from pointblank range.

But Andre Coker squashed any notion of a revival in the 62nd minute with a darting solo run through the midfield before rounding a defender and chipping the keeper from an awkward angle, 15 yards from goal.

Millwall: King, McNamara (Ebuzome), Chesmain, Donovan, Brown, Mbulu, Butcher, Abdou, Smith, Pavey, Philpot (White). Subs not used: Green, Sandford, Mundle-Smith
