"We can't afford to repeat past mistakes," says assistant

Lions warned against complacency ahead of Port Vale clash

Millwall are determined to learn from past mistakes when Port Vale travel to The Den tonight (7.45).

The Lions were held to a goalless draw by Walsall a fortnight ago, just days after toppling Premier League side Watford to progress to the last-16 of the Emirates FA Cup.

"We put in a fantastic performance to progress in the Cup but we didn't hit the same energy levels in our mid-week match," Lions assistant boss Dave Livermore told millwallfc.co.uk

"We need to make sure our match tonight doesn't become another Walsall incident."

The warning follows a superb team performance on Saturday, seeing off Southend United and moving into sixth position on the Sky Bet League One table.

"We can't afford to take our foot off the gas at this stage of the season," Livermore added.

"Getting into the top six has been our target for a while now. Now that we are at the right end of the table we have to fight to stay there.

"Hopefully one or two teams will begin to slip and drop some points, but we can only look after ourselves."

The Den hasn't been a happy hunting ground for travelling teams in recent months, and the assistant gaffer has highlighted the importance of home support as Millwall look to extend their 11 match unbeaten run.

"The fans have been fantastic and they have given us the support and lift when we needed it most this season."

"We appreciate that it can be tough financially for the fans to turn out to all of these mid-week games, we have to pay them back with a strong performance against Port Vale."

The Valiants travel to SE16 languishing in 19th position, having picked up just eight points away from home this season.

Winger Jerome Thomas is expected to be given a late fitness test after picking up a calf injury in the warm-up to Port Vale's 1-1 draw with Gillingham.

Meanwhile, Ben Thompson, Shaun Hutchinson and recovering Lions striker Lee Gregory will be assessed prior to kick-off, while midfielder Shaun Williams will be available for the tie after missing Saturday's match following the birth of his second child.
