Preview | Nottingham Forest v Millwall

Our look ahead to The Lions' Sky Bet Championship opener...

4 August 2017

Nottingham Forest and Millwall meet for the 66th time as they open up the Sky Bet Championship season on Friday night at the City Ground (kick-off 7.45pm)

With pre-season done and dusted, the moment Lions fans have been waiting for since the final whistle at Wembley Stadium in May is nigh.

Millwall boss Neil Harris has a fully-fit squad to choose from, with new signing Ryan Tunnicliffe the only doubt as he brings himself up to speed following his late arrival at the club.

"We're ready. The boys are itching to get going," Harris told "The fans saw a strong performance against Granada last Saturday - pre-season doesn't really mean much, but the boys looked physically ready.

"It is a tough start - the City Ground on a Friday night, but what a great way to announce ourselves back to The Championship. There'll be close to a couple of thousand Millwall fans up there creating a great atmosphere. It's a great opportunity for my players."

Six of The Lions' summer signings in James Meredith, Tom Elliott, Jed Wallace, George Saville, Jake Cooper and Conor McLaughlin will look to be involved in the matchday squad and Harris praised his charges as "competitive," as well as stating that patience is key as the club look to adapt to life in the second tier.

"I've got a very competitive squad. The time for judging my new signings will be in October and November, when they've settled in and made some appearances. Let's not expect too much from those players early on and likewise let's not expect too much from players who performed well last year. Let's be calm and methodical about things.

"But, we have got a healthy squad which gives me selection posers. However, that's the way I want it to be as a manager. The ones who miss out on Friday will be disappointed, but they'll understand. They'll come back stronger and fight for their place back in the team."

Millwall hold the upper hand historically against The Tricky Trees, having won 24 of the previous 65 encounters. The last meeting between the two at the City Ground came in January 2015, when Ricardo Fuller's solitary strike gave The Lions three crucial points in their battle to pull themselves away from the Championship relegation zone.

The most recent meeting between the two came at The Den last season, as Forest overcame a young Lions side in Round Two of the EFL Cup.
