"Scunthorpe result is our blueprint for success," says Williams

High-flying Lions ramp up preparations for Northampton visit

Millwall will seek to anchor themselves within the Sky Bet League One's top six when they host Northampton at The Den on Friday, the scene of their best performance of the season according to Shaun Williams.

The midfielder delivered a standout performance against Scunthorpe earlier this month, scoring the opening goal and laying a platform for a convincing 3-1 win over their play-off rivals.

It was a dominant performance and Williams believes it would be difficult for any team to cope with his side in that kind of blistering form.

"If we can play like that for the rest of the season there's no reason why we wouldn't be promoted," he told

"That's the kind of football we have to emulate against Northampton on Friday and climb higher up the table. It was a great result against Scunthorpe and one that we needed because it kept us in the race for promotion.

"Before that match we were in the middle of a bit of blip, but that result pulled us back out again and we are stronger for it. We all stuck together during that period and now we are reaping the rewards."

The 1-1 draw with Gillingham at the weekend propelled The Lions into the play-off places, leapfrogging Southend into sixth spot with four games remaining.

"It's an exciting time because we have control over our own fate," Williams added. "We know that if we win every game then we will be going to the play-offs again.

"We have had a good run of results and we were disappointed not to pick up all three points again on Saturday. If we can keep that momentum up and not have to look behind us then it will serve us well and do a lot for our confidence in the final weeks of the season."
