Young Lions now unbeaten in sevenMillwall U23s extended their unbeaten run to seven matches at The Den this afternoon, but the 1-1 draw with Cardiff City saw their winning streak of five on the spin come to an end.
With Harry Smith elevated to first team colours, Jamie Philpot, who had recently been on loan at Bromley, returned to the side to lead the line alongside Alfie Pavey.
It turned out to be a mixed afternoon for the young front man who nearly opened the scoring after just three minutes when Pavey nodded a Kyron Farrell free-kick across to him, but Philpot's header was tipped over the bar for a corner by keeper Ollie Byrne.
Philpot didn't have long to wait before getting on the scoresheet, however. On the 10 minute mark, Gregg Wylde's cross was deflected up in the air and after placing his initial header against the post the striker was first to react to make it 1-0 from close range.
The Lions were good value for their lead, but were unable to capitalise on their early superiority and the visitors increasingly got a foothold in the game.
After the break Christian Mbulu, who was dominant in the air at both ends of the pitch, saw a powerful header cleared off the line, but shortly afterwards Cardiff were level.
A cross from Tommy O'Sullivan didn't look to be a particular threat until Eli Phipps nipped in front of Lions keeper Tom King to turn the ball into the net.
King was forced to make a couple of smart saves, whilst at the other end Philpot was injured chasing a through ball and had to be helped from the pitch.
David Worrall was also replaced just past the hour mark and the changes disrupted Millwall's continuity. With the game heading for a draw there was a flare-up following an off the ball incident which saw Wylde and City defender Rollin Menayese both shown the red card.
Millwall: King, Cummings, Chesmain, Donocan, Mbulu, Rooney, Worrall (Bray), Farrell, Pavey, Philpot (Mundle-Smith), Wylde. Subs not used: Girling, Neary, Queeley.
