Millwall U18s hit Worthing U18s for six in FA Youth Cup

Young Lions ease through to Round Two with comfortable win

Millwall eased through to the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup with a comprehensive victory against non-League Worthing at The Den on Monday evening.

Joint bosses Chris Perry and Larry McAvoy had spoken before the game about how important it was for their young charges to address the match with the right attitude - but they needn't have worried as the Lion cubs produced a controlled display.

The odds on a Cup upset were reduced within seven minutes of the start when Tanto Olaofe broke down the right and picked out Mason Saunders-Henry, who swept home the opening goal with aplomb.

Worthing keeper Ethan Belwood was called into action twice in as many minutes, first gathering a stinging Junior Tiensia shot and then blocking from Lewis White as Millwall piled the pressure on.

Matt Day saw his spectacular overhead kick pushed away by the increasingly busy keeper, but a second goal was always in the offing, and duly arrived 10 minutes before the break. A defensive mix-up was punished by Day, who showed super technique to thump home a half-volley from 25 yards.

It took just five second-half minutes for The Lions to add a third goal - and it was the pick of the bunch. Olaofe picked up the ball some three quarters of the way down field, but powered forward past three challenges before despatching a low shot that flew beyond Belward's reach and into the bottom corner.

Millwall had the bit between their teeth and when Saunders-Henry grabbed his second - and the home side's fourth - goal of the night, it was effectively game over for the plucky visitors.

At the other end Ryan Sandford was called into action on the hour mark with a smart stop to save from Jack Newhouse, but it was business as usual when, two minutes after hitting the post, Olaofe bagged his second of the night thumping home the loose ball after Belward had parried a Saunders-Henry cross.

Sub Noel Leighton put the seal on an emphatic victory with the sixth and final goal of the night, punishing a defensive error with a clinical, angled finish beyond the keeper's reach.
