Report | Millwall U21s 0-0 Charlton Athletic U21s

14 March 2016

Full-time score from Hayes Lane

Millwall's Elite Development Squad battled to a hard-fought 0-0 draw with League leaders Charlton Athletic at Hayes Lane on Monday afternoon.

Justin Skinner was able to name a strong side with senior players David Forde, Sid Nelson, Fred Onyedinma and Aiden O'Brien amongst those involved, but it was The Addicks who enjoyed the better start, forcing a succession of corners during the opening exchanges which Millwall defended well.

The Lions had their first meaningful effort on goal after 15 minutes when Kyron Farrell dribbled his way through two players before finding O'Brien, who in turn played the ball inside to Jamie Philpot to shoot straight at keeper Dimitar Mitov from outside the box.

Millwall had Forde to thank for keeping the score level just before the half-hour mark when he produced a smart stop low to his right to keep out Ayo Obileye's dipping free-kick before Nelson turned a set-piece wide at the other end.

Clear cut goalscoring chances were at a premium during an even opening half but Charlton did almost grab an opener seconds before the interval when Regan Charles-Cook saw a drilled low cross just evade the red shirts inside the six-yard box.

The Lions created their best opportunity of the game to that point after 53 minutes when Forde's long ball forward bounced over the Charlton defence but the eager Philpot, in space on the right-hand side of the box, could only send a half-volley over the bar.

Skinner's side had an even better chance shortly after the hour mark but O'Brien shot wide from close range after Kris Twardek's cross was deflected into the striker's path.

Charlton introduced Montell Moore from the bench with 20 minutes left to play and he provided The Addicks with some fresh attacking impetus, firing wide from 20 yards as both sides continued to search for an opening goal.

The away side were ending the game strongly and almost netted a late goal when Charles-Cook sent an effort over the bar moments after Brandon Hanlan had shot straight at Forde.

At the other end, though, Millwall could and maybe should have secured the win in the 90th minute, but Mitov produced a smart stop to deny Twardek following Philpot's centre and Jack Powell couldn't quite reach the loose ball to tap home, leaving both sides having to settle for a point apiece.

Millwall: Forde, Brown, Nelson, Mbulu, Swift, Onyedinma, Powell, Farrell, Twardek, O'Brien, Philpot. Subs not used: Girling, Parr, Donovan, Eze, Ndjoli
