Millwall chairman provides regeneration update

Berylson confirms April meeting with Cabinet members

Millwall chairman John Berylson has issued the following statement:

"I am very grateful to all our fans, friends and interested members of the community for the support that they have given to the club, especially over the past couple of months. The threat to Millwall's future posed by Lewisham Council's intention to seek compulsory purchase orders on our land is very real. The matter was withdrawn from the agenda for the Mayor and Cabinet meeting on 17th February at the last moment. I have no doubt that the existence of the Defend our Den petition with, at that time, just over 15,000 signatures played its part in that decision, as did the numerous messages supporting Millwall that were sent to Lewisham Cabinet members. We should never underestimate the power of the people in a democracy.

The threat has not been lifted. It was made clear by the Cabinet that the compulsory purchase orders should be brought back for consideration to a future Mayor and Cabinet meeting at the earliest opportunity. I very much hope that will not happen and we are doing our best to make it unnecessary and irrelevant. Andy Ambler, our chief executive, immediately invited all members of the Lewisham Cabinet to come and visit The Den, see the site for themselves and hear about our plans for the land adjoining the stadium. I am delighted that the invitation has been accepted and a visit is being arranged in April. I shall attend that meeting.

We remain hugely supportive of the ambition to develop the area that used to be called the Surrey Canal Triangle and is now known as New Bermondsey. So we are updating and revising the plans that we prepared in 2013 - which the Council declined to consider - and will show them to Cabinet members when they visit us. Our plans will include homes, shops, a hotel and conference centre, a new cafe, artists' studios and, very importantly, new premises for our Millwall Community Trust whose future must also be safeguarded.

We will of course keep you all informed of progress."
