Pavey grabs late winner for The Lions at Greenwich Borough

Millwall edge a five-goal thriller

A select Millwall XI edged a five-goal thriller with a hard fought 3-2 win at Greenwich Borough on Friday night.

In what was the official stadium opening of Borough's new DSG Marine Stadium, a bumper crowd enjoyed an entertaining game in SE9.

A youthful Lions side created a couple of half chances before taking the lead on 24 minutes courtesy of Kris Twardek's left foot shot, that found the back of the net via a fortuitous deflection off Glen Wilson.

The home side, featuring former Lions Gary Alexander and Peter Sweeney, hauled themselves level on the hour mark. Danny McNamara's attempted pass to Noah Chesmain was intercepted by Jake Britnell, who ran through and calmly slotted the ball past keeper Ryan Sandford.

Greenwich got their noses in front just five minutes later when Mohammed Eisa's wicked right-foot free-kick bypassed everyone, including keeper Sandford, and dropped into the back of the net.

However The Lions regained parity thanks to Jamie Philpot's 70th-minute penalty equaliser after Twardek's goalbound effort had been handled.

The young Lions pushed on and grabbed what proved to be the winning goal 12 minutes from time. Sub Alfie Pavey forced home from close range after Philpot's initial shot had been saved by Boro keeper Craig Holloway.

Millwall: Sandford, McNamara, Chesmain, Donovan, Bray, Rooney, Farrell, Shonibare, Smith, Philpot, Twardek. Subs: Green, Jackson, Ebuzoeme, Pavey, J.White, L.White, Day.
