New era for Millwall Lionesses begins on Sunday

5 February 2016

Sawiuk's side in action against Watford Ladies

An exciting new era for Millwall Lionesses starts this Sunday when their 2016 season kicks-off with a SSE Women's FA Cup tie away to Watford Ladies (2pm).

The club's FA WSL campaign doesn't begin until the 24th March, so this weekend's fixture is a first chance for new manager Rebecca Sawiuk to see her side in competitive action.

Sawiuk, who was appointed last month, has wasted no time in strengthening her squad, bringing in new signings Leighanne Robes, Emily Heaslip, Dawn Mallett and Lucy Loomes.

Sunday's fixture promises to be extra special for Robes and Heaslip, who have both joined the Lionesses from Watford, and the duo have paid tribute to Sawiuk for her influence in securing their moves to the Lionesses.

Robes, a defender, told "After the first conversation I had with Rebecca I knew that I wanted to sign. Straight away I was buzzing to get going.

"It looks like it is going to be a good season. There has been quite a few new players who have come in and obviously a great manager has been appointed, so it's looking really positive."

Midfielder Heaslip added: "I had a few conversations with Rebecca over the phone and in the end it was quite an easy decision (to join). With everything she offered, along with the kind of approach she has and her managerial style, we gelled straight away and this was an opportunity I couldn't turn down."
