Striker Noel on target as young Lions win again
Noel Leighton capped off a superb second-half performance with two goals in 15 minutes as the young Lions cruised to a 3-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra U23s on Monday afternoon.
Leighton's double, along with a converted penalty from Kyren Mundle-Smith, ensured Justin Skinner's side extended their dazzling Professional Development League run to just one defeat from their last nine outings.
With the senior side in Emirates FA Cup action on Sunday and again at home to Wycombe Wanderers in the Checkatrade Trophy on Wednesday, the young Lions boss named a particularly youthful squad for the match.
Regular goalkeeper Tom King's omission paved the way for Ryan Sandford to pull on the gloves and it took just two minutes for the England U18s stopper to be called into action, deflecting Charlie Kirk's angled drive from inside the box.
Having survived an early scare, the visitors settled into the match and found their reward in the 28th minute. Mundle-Smith opened the young Lions account from the spot, converting a penalty after being brought crashing down in the area.
A quick counter-attack in the 59th minute had the nimble Tanto Olaofe bearing down on the Crewe Alexandra goal. He squared the ball for Leighton, who poked the ball into the bottom corner to double Millwall's tally.
And it wasn't long before the had his second goal of the afternoon. The forward pounced on a loose ball in the 73rd minute, broke into the area and tucked the ball past the reach of Richards to crown an excellent awayday win.
Team: Sandford, Brown (Olaofe), Chesmain, Donovan, Bray, Rooney, McNamara, Farrell, Leighton, Mundle-Smith, Ebuzoeme. Subs not used: Jackson, White, Hanson.
