Community coaches give troops the edge
Millwall are delighted to welcome special guests from Woolwich Army Barracks to today's game with Sheffield United.
Around 20 troops will be at The Den and introduced on the pitch at around 2.40pm before embarking on a lap of honour so supporters can show their appreciation.
Last week, three coaches from the Millwall Community Trust answered a call from Essex Company of 1st Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment on the eve of their Inter-Company tournament at Woolwich Army Barracks.
Major Martin Hedley, who also plays at centre back for the team, explained: "We were looking for a competitive advantage and approached a number of clubs in Essex and South London to see if we could get some professional help. It was Millwall who responded and we were delighted they agreed to help."
Richard White, who delivered the two day coaching sessions along with Tom Rolt and Gary Otim said: "Supporting our troops is something that is close to the hearts of Millwall Football Club, its fans and the Community Trust.
"We were proud to help them out, and even prouder when they made a presentation to us at the end of the two days, because in our minds it was just an honour to be able to give something back to these lads who sacrifice so much for us.
"These soldiers put a lot of pro footballers to shame fitness-wise. On the Monday we delivered a two-hour session including fitness and agility work, only to find out they then did more fitness and played in a six-a-side tournament."
Team coach Cpl Andrew Ferguson added: "It was very useful for me, talking to the coaches and getting some advice from people who do this every day."
Another player, Cpl Joe Robinson, agreed, saying: "It's good to get input from outside, particularly from a good club like Millwall. The teamwork and leadership skills you learn from playing football can stand you in good stead when you’re away on operations too."
Millwall’s input clearly had the desired effect, as Martin, Joe, Andy and co. romped to victory in the tournament itself last Wednesday.
