Millwall Lionesses slip to first defeat

28 April 2016

Last-gasp agony for Sawiuk's side

A dramatic injury-time penalty from Nicola Watts condemned Millwall Lionesses to a first League defeat of the season against London Bees on Wednesday night.

Jo Wilson was brought down by goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill in the last few seconds of the game - and Watts held her nerve to convert the spot-kick and secure a hard-fought win for her side.

There were plenty of chances from the outset at The Hive and after a quick counter attack Wilson ran through on goal and slotted past Quantrill to give Bees a ninth-minute lead.

At the other end, Amber Gaylor had a similar chance 10 minutes later but goalkeeper Sophie Harris closed her down before Sophie Fogarty dealt with the danger.

Substitute Lilli Maple made an instant impact in the second-half, injecting some pace and creativity to the Lionesses' attacking play. Rebecca Sawiuk's side began to dominate, although Watts was unlucky not to double the home side's lead on 55 minutes, striking the underside of the bar with a free-kick from 30 yards.

Then Fliss Gibbons (pictured) hit the upright with a sizzling strike on the hour - one minute before the leveller, which came when Naomi Cole's free-kick from the left skimmed across the box and into the back of the net.

But it was Watts who was to have the last word for Bees in the second minute of injury time.

Millwall Lionesses: Quantrill, Brooks, Robe, Heaslip (Maple, 46'), Cowan, Cole, Nicol (Wynne, 58'), Carlton, Gaylor (Loomes, 58'), Gibbons, Babajide. Subs not used: Strugnell, Sherwood, Taylor, Fisk.

Don't forget that the Lionesses take on Yeovil Town Ladies at The Den on Saturday directly after Millwall have played Oldham Athletic. Kick-off in SE16 is at 6.30pm and fans who have a ticket for the men's game can stay behind and watch Sawiuk's side for free.
