Report: Millwall 3-1 Leeds United

7 September 2015

Full-time score from The Den

Millwall maintained their impressive run of form with a third consecutive Elite Development Squad victory as goals from Alfie Pavey (2) and Keaton Wood saw off Leeds United by a 3-1 scoreline at The Den.

Following wins against Crewe (1-0) and Ipswich Town (3-0), Justin Skinner's young charges went into action in confident mood.

There were just 36 seconds on the clock when Pavey got the home side off to a dream start, lashing the ball home from 30-yards with an effort that gave Leeds keeper Charlie Horton no chance.

The visitors went close to levelling after eight minutes when Eoghan Stokes sent a free-kick a whiskler wide of Harry Girling's  right-hand post.

Millwall doubled their lead just before the quarter-hour mark courtesy of a smart header by Wood from Jack Powell's pinpoint free-kick.

Trialist Kyle Spence saw his deep cross held under the bar at the back post by keeper Horton as The Lions pushed to extend their lead.

Leeds were denied a goal by the woodwork on 38 minutes with a Luke Parkin shot from 16 yards that smacked the bottom of the post and moments later Girling came to the rescue, flinging himself across the goal to push Parkin's piledriver round the post.

Millwall produced a couple of promising moves in the opening exchanges of the second-half when Paris Cowan-Hall and John Marquis twice combined to try and play Spence in on goal, but the visiting defence cleared on both occasions.

However a third goal duly arrived for Skinner's charges on 56 minutes with a cool piece of finishing from Pavey, who rounded the keeper and slotted home for his second - and Millwall's third - goal of the game.

Leeds reduced the arrears just two minutes later when Christian Mbulu was penalised for a foul and Tom Pearce cracked home the resulting spot-kick.

But the damage had already been done and other than a smart save by Girling to thwart Alex Purver's low drive, Leeds rarely threatened and The Lions comfortably saw out the remainder of the game.

Millwall: Girling, Parr, Mbulu, Wood, Chesmain, Powell, Spence (Mulrooney-Skinner, 88mins), Cowan-Hall, Pavey (Okenabirhie, 86mins), Marquis, Philpot (Eze, 46mins). Subs not used: Sandford, Brown.
