Millwall sign Jos Hooiveld on loan

26 January 2015

Dutch defender joins for the rest of the season

Millwall have signed Southampton defender Jos Hooiveld on loan for the rest of the season.

The centre-back, 31, who has made six appearances on loan at Norwich City this season, becomes Millwall's sixth signing of the January transfer window so far.

"I want as much success as possible - as many wins and as many clean sheets as we can - which is just what every footballer hopes for," Hooiveld said after putting pen-to-paper.

"It is very important (to be playing regularly) and I'm no different from anyone else.

"I had a very nice and positive conversation with the manager. We had a good connection.

"Every game from now on is massive. It isn't just one game that decides it - there are 20."

The Dutch defender began his career in his native country with spells at Heerenveen and Zwolle before playing for Kapfenberger SV in Austria and Inter Turku in Finland.

After spending a year with Swedish side AIK, Hooiveld, who stands 6'4" tall, joined Celtic in 2010 but after one year with the Scottish club was loaned to Copenhagen and then to Southampton, who he joined permanently in 2011. The defender helped Saints to promotion from the Championship in his first season at the club.

Hooiveld went on to make 77 appearances for the south coast side, scoring nine times, before making his temporary switch to Carrow Road in the early part of this season.

The towering defender, who will wear the number five shirt, trained with his new Lions team-mates for the first time on Monday and is in contention to make his debut for Millwall in tomorrow's game with Reading.
