White on target as young Lions beat Bristol City

7 December 2015

Full-time report from Calmont Road

Lewis White hit a late winner as Millwall U18s recorded a narrow 1-0 victory against their Bristol City counterparts at Calmont Road on Saturday morning.

The Lions had already rattled the woodwork on three occasions before White finally grabbed the all-important goal with just five minutes remaining to secure maximum points.

However there were a few scares early on for Millwall, who had goalkeeper Ryan Sandford to thank for keeping out City in the opening minutes. The visitors did also get the ball in the back of the net, although the effort was disallowed for offside.

The home side gradually started to make headway and exert pressure of their own. In the 20th minute Mikael Ndjoli nearly made the breakthrough, but his lobbed effort over the City keeper glanced the wrong side of the upright following a neat move involving Rian Bray and Danny McNamara.

Ndjoli was in the thick of the action once more just five minutes later when, having been played in by Alex Mulrooney-Skinner, he saw his fierce drive initially parried by the keeper and then his follow-up effort blocked on the line.

The Lions failed to find the back of the net during their overwhelming pressure in the first-half and after the break there were times when the City goal appeared to be leading a charmed life with White, Mulrooney-Skinner and Ndjoli all denied by the woodwork.

Millwall continued on the front foot, forcing a succession of corners, but found the visiting defence in fine form as they threw their bodies in front of the ball to make some vital blocks.

In the 70th minute it looked as though The Lions would actually make a much deserved breakthrough when White's cross found Ndjoli in the six-yard box, but somehow his effort was scythed away by a defender on the line.

With time ticking away and the game heading into the final five minutes, The Lions finally grabbed what proved to be the winner thanks to a cool finish from White to clinch a richly deserved victory.
