EDS boss Justin delighted with League Cup progress
Millwall's U21 side are being rewarded for their 'phenomenal' work ethic, manager Justin Skinner has said.
The club's Elite Development Squad booked their place in the U21s Premier League Cup Quarter-Finals with a superb 3-1 win at Wolves on Monday night thanks to goals from Fred Onyedinma, Mahlon Romeo and Paris Cowan-Hall.
As well as securing their Cup progress, Skinner's side are second in the League table and have had a remarkable opening half to the season, during which they have beaten the likes of Swansea, Crystal Palace and Watford.
"It's all down to this group. They are just putting in consistently good performances," he told millwallfc.co.uk
"Their work ethic is phenomenal in every game and they are getting the rewards for that.
"The winning helps because it breeds confidence. Last night we started really well, went a goal in front but even when they pulled one back the lads didn't panic; they kept going, used their energy and made the most of our goal threat.
"The pitch was extremely wet but we adapted to the conditions well. We didn't allow them to play and that has been the key to our success so far."
While Monday night's squad was boosted with a handful of players with first team experience, throughout the season so far Skinner's side has included several of the club's U18 squad.
"I'm delighted with the youngsters," he added. "While it was only Noah (Chesmain) who played last night, when we were at Swansea we ended up with six youth team players on the pitch.
"The way they adapt to each other shows that we have a good core to the group. That bodes well not just for now, but also for the next few years.
"What has helped is that the manager has proved that they have a chance to get into the first team, no matter how old they are. With the likes of Ben Thompson, Fred Onyedinma and Alfie Pavey they can see their mates getting minutes for the senior squad and that spurs them on even more."
