Table-toppers produce a five-star show at The Den
FA WSL 2 table-toppers Doncaster Belles underlined their promotion credentials with a clinical 5-0 win against Millwall Lionesses at The Den on Sunday afternoon.
Despite putting up a good show against an experienced Donny side, Dan Mlinar's Lionesses found the visitors in red-hot form with goals from Bethany England, Sue Smith, Nicole Dale and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk (2) securing victory.
Belles showed their attacking intent straight from kick-off and within the opening seconds Smith saw a chipped cross headed away.
The visitors made the breakthrough after four minutes with a sublime effort from Sweetman-Kirk, who was set free down the left and cut inside before curling a superb effort past keeper Sarah Quantrill.
Millwall tried in vain to work their way back into the game and came close to levelling when the Belles could only half clear a free-kick and Danielle Carlton's 18-yard drive flashed narrowly wide.
However it was Donny who produced another piece of clinical finishing to make it 2-0 with a low close-range drive by England after good work from Kasia Lipka.
The visitors were now in control and Smith had a couple of efforts from distance that went narrowly over. Smith finally added her name to the score-sheet five minutes before half-time, getting just enough on Sweetman-Kirk's squared pass to divert the ball over the line.
It took a superb reflex save from Quantrill to deny Donny a fourth goal early in the second-half, clawing away Leandra Little's bullet header from a Sophie Barker corner.
Millwall refused to give up and kept pressing forward, trying to utilise the pace of Rinsola Babajide and Fliss Gibbon, but the Belles defended well and snuffed out any potential danger.
The visitors added two goals in the final 20 minutes to complete the scoring with Sweetman-Kirk coolly rounding Quantrill for the fourth and Dale beating the offside trap before producing a composed finish to top off a five star performance.
