Competition for places is key, says the AustralianScott McDonald is enjoying his role in Millwall's positive start to the season - but insists The Lions still have plenty of room for improvement over the coming weeks and months.
McDonald scored his first goal of the campaign in last Saturday's win over Blackpool, a result which took Millwall's points return to 10 from the first 15 available, and the Australian believes Ian Holloway's side are better off for the competition for places within the squad.
"We've got a great nucleus with so many good players coming back," he said. "You really are on your toes all the time having to perform otherwise you're out of the team. There is so much competition for places all round and it's very healthy for the club.
"I'm enjoying being part of it," the 31-year-old continued. "That's what any footballer wants to do - they want to play.
"The gaffer is encouraging players to do all sorts of different things and we're trying to do it as much as we can. It's going to take time to implement it as well as we can but it's all positive.
"We could do things this year but it's one step at a time. We will have two good weeks of training now and prepare for the next game."
