Manager delighted after defender's goal secures 1-0 win over Cardif

Millwall boss Ian Holloway was full of praise for Danny Shittu after the defender's second-half header secured a 1-0 win over Cardiff City.

Shittu - in his first League start of the season - met Shaun Williams' delivery at the far post to score in the 54th minute and help The Lions record their first win since August 30th.

"The lads are giving Danny some stick because he's gone and got his big head on it," a delighted Ollie said afterwards. "He's a great ambassador for this football club and you can see how much the fans love him.

"He has been knocking on my door for a couple of weeks now to tell me that he is ready, but we've had to be careful with him because of the injury he had to his achilles.

"We're all delighted that he has gone and got the goal because he's a big personality around the place and is a key part of the squad."

Ollie made five changes from Tuesday's 0-0 draw with Wigan and was rewarded with an energetic performance from his side, who could've won more comfortably after a string of second-half opportunities.

"It was just about getting that goal for us," the boss added. "We worked incredibly hard and had quite a few chances. In the end we could maybe have made it a bit easier for ourselves but defensively we were good.

"The performance was a professional one and I'm pleased with that. I made a few changes from Tuesday but you couldn't tell; it wasn't a bitty display.

"Sometimes you need your goalkeeper to make some saves and Fordey has pulled off an unbelievable double stop in the first-half. Then you have to take a chance that comes your way and big Danny has done that for us.

"The lads are working incredibly hard for each other and that is all you can ask from my point of view. We want to start climbing that table and a couple of wins would do that for us."
