Chopper: Danny Shittu is great role model

7 October 2014

Lions coach Neil Harris heaps praise on defender

Neil Harris heaped praise on Danny Shittu after the experienced defender skippered Millwall's U21s to a dramatic 6-5 League Cup penalty shoot-out win against Colchester United on Monday evening.

Danny, 34, produced a vintage defensive display in the heart of a young Lions back four, cajoling, encouraging and demanding high standards from his team-mates in a game that went the full distance of 120 minutes following extra-time.

"I think Danny epitomises what every professional should be about," said Chopper. "He stepped down to the U21s to gain some match practice and he led the team; his talking in the dressing-room, his talking and communication with the young lads on the pitch was first class.

"That's what a leader is all about, that's what a captain is all about. He's done that for years and years to his sides and he did it against Colchester.

"It wasn't just his leadership, it was the way he played as well. He was the one that was throwing his body in front of the ball at the end of 90 minutes and at the end of extra time, and if those young players want to have a career in the game then they need to look no further than Danny Shittu."
