A little taste of Brazil in Bermondsey
The World Cup came early in SE16 when eight schools from across Lewisham and Southwark competed in a seven-a-side football tournament at The Den - and St Thomas the Apostle were crowned champions after a thrilling final against Deptford Green.
With 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil fast approaching, the Millwall Community Trust and Millwall FC Academy organised this tournament for year 7 and 8 boys from secondary schools across the two boroughs and competed in a similar competition format to that which Roy Hodgson’s England team will face next month.
The boys were able to grace the hallowed Den turf in front of Millwall Academy Manager Scott Fitzgerald, who was looking on from the stands.
Scott said: "The schools event at The Den saw some excellent individual skill and team play from all the schools that took part.
"All the boys that participated in the event were very well behaved and conducted themselves in a mature and adult manner as ambassadors of their respective school."
St Thomas the Apostle from Southwark and Lewisham's Deptford Green contested the final with Apostle winning 1-0 on penalties after a very close encounter during normal time.
Dean Middleton, teacher and team manager of the winning St Thomas the Apostle School team, enthused: "The whole day was an amazing experience for all involved. The interaction between the schools was outstanding and the day was a big success.
"To be included in a great day at Millwall FC was good, but to win was an outstanding achievement for the pupils of STAC."
Community Development team leader Richard White added: "Although all the teams came here to win, the most important thing was that they all went away with a smile and had a great experience of playing in a professional football stadium, which is an opportunity Millwall are proud to provide through its Community Trust.
"This is an annual event that Millwall Community Trust run and there are lots more exciting opportunities available to local schools in the boroughs of Lewisham and Southwark in the near future."
