Lionesses serve up a Sunday treat

Millwall Lionesses maintained their unbeaten start to the FA WSL League with a 2-0 win against Oxford United at a scorching Den on Sunday afternoon.

A goal in either half from Cherelle Albert (42mins) and sub Emma Plewa (90mins) were just reward for an excellent display by the Lionesses.

Manager Alberto Kurti enthused: "We are pleased with the three points. I am delighted with the work-rate commitment and attitude shown by the team, especially in the heat.

"It was great to see Emma come on and score after being out for so long with a bad injury -  to come and get that second goal settled us down.

"Credit should go to our defence because Oxford put us under an incredible amount of pressure and caused us problems but we held firm."

Millwall started the strongest and the lively Albert struck the bar inside the first minute following an adventurous run down the wing from Lillie Billson.

Oxford had a glorious chance to take the lead after five minutes when Laura Low put the ball wide from six yards after a clever cut-back from Lauren Alison.

Millwall then took control and visiting keeper Hannah Cox was called into action on 25 minutes when she made a fine double save.

However there was little the stopper could do to prevent the Lionesses taking the lead three minutes before the break with a sensational opener. There seemed to be little danger when Albert picked up the ball with her back to goal around 30 yards out, but she turned a defender and rifled the ball into the top corner to leave Cox grasping at thin air.

Oxford pushed for the equaliser in the second-half and were denied by the post after 49 minutes when Alison’s effort came back off the upright following neat play from Helen King.

King then won her side a free-kick 30 yards out after a surging run through the middle of the field and Gemma Connor-Iommi’s shot forced a good save from Sarah Quantrill in the home goal.

But despite the visitors' best efforts the win was sealed well on 90 minutes on when substitute Plewa sent over a cross-shot that caught out everyone, including keeper Cox, and the ball floated into the back of the net to secure victory.
