All square in derby draw
London Bees 0 Millwall Lionesses 0
Millwall Lionesses continued their unbeaten start to the season with a battling draw against London Bees in the FA Continental Cup.
Thursday night's game was played in driving rain and chances were limited for both teams, with Lionesses midfielder Leeta Rutherford coming closest to scoring with a second-half effort tipped onto the bar by the home keeper.
Millwall changed their formation from the 4-3-3 used on Sunday to a 4-4-2 set-up. Lillie Billson missed the match due to suspension so Sophie Perry moved up to the left wing with young Frankie Struggnell coming in at left-back and Shirvae Edwards handed her full debut.
The Lionesses had the best of the opening exchanges and striker Kim Stenning went close after five minutes but her shot was saved by the keeper.
Fellow forward Cherrelle Albert was also denied by the Bees stopper and saw her powerful shot pushed over the bar four minutes later.
Edwards had the best chance of the half for Millwall when she was played through by Sophie Perry, but the keeper just managed to get a vital touch to knock the ball out of play for a corner.
The Bees eventually grew into the match and the dangerous Hinchcliffe’s speed and link play with Bees captain Dawn Mallet was starting to create problems for the Lionesses, but they couldn’t break through.
The second-half continued in the same fashion and Millwall sub Shauni Griffiths nearly made an instant impact, hitting the inside of the bar with a clever flick before the keeper caught the ball on the goal-line.
Rutherford then had an effort tipped onto the bar as the visitors tried to find a way through to secure victory, but the Bees held firm and ensured that the teams finished with a point each.
Team: Gibbs, Cole, Lennon, Davies, Strugnell, Agg, Rutherford (Maple, 76mins), Edwards, Perry, Albert (Sherwood, 88mins) , Stenning (Griffiths, 70mins). Sub not used: Runnacles.
The Lionesses are back in action at The Den this Sunday when they entertain Reading FC Women. Kick-Off is 2pm with tickets priced at £5 adult and £2 for U16s. Tickets are available from the Millwall ticket office or online here
