Development squad close the gap on Gunners
Becky Stormer grabbed a dramatic 87th-minute winner as Millwall Lionesses Development Squad edged to a narrow 1-0 win against Reading FC Women.
It was the perfect response by the Lionesses, who put the disappointment of last weekend's defeat at the hands of Arsenal firmly behind them to reclaim second place in the table and claw back points on the league leaders.
Sunday's game against Reading looked to be heading for a draw until centre-back Stormer rose highest to meet Ciara Sherwood's inviting free-kick and power a header home to secure victory late on.
Both teams created chances and enjoyed their fair share of possession but it was Millwall who started the game with greater urgency and striker Abi Igbavboa broke through on goal within the first five minutes, only for the Reading keeper to make a fine save.
Igbavboa got behind the Reading defence again soon after thanks to a neatly worked pass from Emma Sherwood. Turning two midfielders, Sherwood knocked the ball over the Reading back four for the speedy Igbavboa to run in on goal, but again the Reading keeper stood strong and saved bravely.
During the second-half Reading went close as they hit a post and enjoyed more of the possession, but Millwall continued to enjoy the better of the chances.
Jose Elliott fired agonisingly wide following a fantastic surging run up the line from left-back Leanne Cowan from deep in her own half.
Captain Sherwood then went even closer with a free-kick struck from just outside the box which sailed inches over the crossbar as the Lionesses kept the pressure on.
The breakthrough finally came when another Sherwood free-kick picked out Stormer who headed home at the far post.
Millwall now host table-topping face Arsenal Ladies at Beckenham Town FC this Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash. The game kicks off at 2pm with entry free for all fans.
