Lionesses keep the pressure on
Millwall Lionesses 3 Oxford United 0
The Lionesses Development team kept up their relentless pursuit of the FA WSL Development League title with another impressive home victory.
Two first-half strikes from Emma Sherwood and Stevie Lamb (pictured) set Millwall on the path to victory, with Shauni Griffiths rounding off the scoring after the break.
It took 21 minutes to break through a resilient Oxford defence with a quick counter-attack, involving some nice one touch football between midfielder Lamb, full-back Frankie Strugnall and winger Griffiths. Griffiths drove to the byline, cut the ball back for striker Sherwood to slot home the opener.
Ten minutes later, Ciara Sherwood broke up the Oxford play in midfield and played slipped a neat pass through to Lamb, who guided the ball under the advancing keeper and into the bottom left corner to double Millwall's lead.
The visitors stepped up a gear after the break but found home keeper Nikita Runnacles and the Millwall back form in dominant form as they successfully frustrated their opponents.
Coach Artie Myftari switched his side around for the final 15 minutes and the move paid dividends with Griffiths scoring the third killer goal. Receiving the ball out wide, she broke through the Oxford defence and lobbed the keeper to claim her third goal in three outings and wrap up the points.
The win moves the Lionesses one step closer to the top of the table, with two games in hand over leaders Arsenal, who they meet in a potential title-decider at Beckenham Town next week.
