Report: Yeovil 2 Millwall Lionesses 0

28 July 2014

Boss Kurti rues missed chances

Millwall Lionesses were left ruing a stack of missed chances as they dropped to sixth place in the FA WSL2 table with Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Yeovil Town.
Goals from Nicola Cousins and Helen Bleazard were enough to secure Yeovil a third win of the season against a Millwall side missing influential skipper Dionne Lennon, who joins Emma Whitter on the sidelines with a broken leg.

"I thought we kept the ball better," said boss Alberto Kurti. "I thought we were the better side in terms of going forward and creating chances.

"Yeovil are not a bad side, but we did not deserve to lose the game if I’m being perfectly honest. We tried hard, we worked hard and we are disappointed that we didn’t get anything from the game.”

Kurti opted to give new signing Jade Dempster her debut partnering Kylie Davies at centre-half in place of the injured Lennon.

Yeovil took the lead in the 13th minute when Cousins stabbed home from close range after the Millwall defence failed to clear their lines following a Helen Bleazard free-kick.

The hosts went close again on 21 minutes, this time Ellie Curson's angled shot was turned behind for a corner by Lionesses’ keeper Sarah Quantrill.

Millwall's best chance of the half came 10 minutes before the break when Lily Agg's long-range effort was saved by the home keeper.

Yeovil were denied a second goal by the brilliance of keeper QUantrill, who turned Sarah Wiltshire's goalbound effort away seven minutes after the restart.

Wiltshire went close again on 59 minutes, on this occasion jinking through the Millwall defence, but was unable to find the target.

Millwall kept plugging away and asking questions of the Yeovil defence and home keeper Howard produced a stunning one-handed save to tip another shot from Agg over the bar as the visitors pressed for the equaliser.

However Yeovil put the result beyond reach in the 73rd-minute when a foul on Wiltshire gave Bleazard the opportunity to fire home a sweetly struck free-kick from the edge of the penalty area and secure all three points.
Millwall: Quantrill, Cole, Dempster (Mackie, 53mins), Davies, Strugnell, Rutherford, Maresevic (Lamb, 64mins), Agg, Billson, Stenning (Albert, 73mins), Perry. Subs not used: Maple, Tuison.
